Day 50 - Monday, March 22

Our 17 day stay in Zion ended today as we headed East out of the park to Camp Verde, Arizona.  First stop was Page, Az to check out the Glen Canyon National Recration Area 3 miles north of the Glen Canyon Dam.  We had heard conflicting reports about the campground and wanted to see for ourselves.  We were impressed!  Very nice, clean, and relatively new full hook up RV park operated by Aramark.  We left thinking this would be a good staging area for a "family &/or friends" Lake Powell houseboat excursion.

Drove on over the Dam, through Page, and south on US89 heading towards Flagstaff.  We passed the Dam visitors center that offered tours, we passed through Page with a Safeway store (one of our favorite), we passed hiking trails that followed Glen Canyon and the Colorado River, and we said "why are we leaving this area?"  We turned around and went back!

Page is only about 120 miles from Zion so we didn't really get far.  But by the time we turned around (had to drive about 10 miles out of town before there was an area large enough for me to turn around), and got back to the campground it was around 2:00pm.  The road to Page, while paved and a US highway, rattled the RV pretty bad.  When we pulled into the campsite, we couldn't get out of the RV through the RV door - it was stuck.  We could get out of the cab of the RV, of course, but not the side door.  I'll shorten this a bit - it took me 2 hours to get it open. The latch was broken so I had to find a way to remove the whole thing with doing too much damage to the RV.  Got "her" done, but there goes our afternoon to site-see a little.

We look out at Lake Powell from the campsite and so limited our afternoon to taking the dogs to the lake for a swim and a long walk along the shore.  This place is huge with parking for thousands of vehicles and camping for about 300.  In the summer it must be "nuts" here.

Back to the campsite and long hot showers at the campground.  Zion has no shower facilities so we've been limited to short RV showers recently.  That's it for Monday.  We will have more with pictures tomorrow.
